Born in India, Nicola was raised in Kenya and South Africa, spending most of her time on safari with her family where she developed a deep love and understanding of the bush. She then worked for a company in Botswana, managing camps in the Okavango Delta as well as in Namibia on the Caprivi Strip. She has a degree in nature conservation and has diplomas in viniculture and viticulture. Before departing South Africa, she took her pilots licence and she spends three months of each year in Africa, travelling with her own family and on her own, testing the finest places for family safaris and regions which are entirely off the beaten track where she can spend time bird watching and star gazing! Nicola also rides and rigorously tests out trusty steeds on riding safaris wherever possible!
The Explorations Company
The Explorations Company was founded in 1990 by Nicola Shepherd as an extension of her passion for Africa, its wildlife and surrounding environment. The company was appointed on several occasions by the Financial Times Newspaper to arrange pioneering safaris for small groups of its readers such as elephant safaris with Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton, world authority on the African elephant. African Explorations is renowned for its indepth knowledge and expertise, with specialists who all come from Africa or having spent much of their lives there – bringing an understanding of a continent that stems from being in tune with its seasons. Each safari is bespoke – no two safaris created have been the same in 22 years and we take you off the beaten track, showcasing Africa at her finest, matched only by the most knowledgeable guides in areas of pristine beauty.
